SB2019 X CONVERSE CHUCKS

In conjunction with Singapore Biennale 2019, Singapore Art Museum (SAM) organised a sneaker design competition to relay an interpretation of Singapore Biennale 2019’s title Every Step in the Right Direction onto a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor All Star sneakers.

The Ripple Effect can be described as when an interactions can affect situations indirectly related to the initial interaction. Much like stepping into a puddle of water, our decision to take that step forward can and will determine the effect it will cause to the people and things around us. Therefore, it is important that every step forward should be a step in the right direction.

Inspired by the aesthetic of the natural ripple movement on water bodies, the design includes controlled but irregular increments of waves in varying hues of teal. This is to simulate the concept behind The Ripple Effect while accommodating to the form of the shoes. Contrasting details like liquid dripping down the side represents imperfections we all possess that, although seemingly stands out, it somehow completes the design and it shows that sometimes it is alright to not make the right direction.
